Calming sounds for dogs

Updated 22 October 2026

Dogs hear more than we do and are startled by sounds we barely notice. A steady background sound can soften bangs, thunder, and street noise, and make an empty house feel less empty. Below are mixes for a dog home alone, a nervous dog, and fireworks night.

How to set it up

  1. For everyday calm, press Play on Calm dog: brown noise, a fan, and soft rain.
  2. For a dog home alone, try Dog home alone. It sounds like a lived-in room, with a fan and a quiet murmur.
  3. For fireworks or a storm, start Fireworks cover before the noise begins. Its deep noise covers bangs better than higher sounds can.
  4. Put the speaker near your dog's bed or crate, not right next to it, and start at a low volume.
  5. Start playing it on calm days too, so the sound does not become a signal that something scary is coming.

What sounds calm dogs?

Shelter studies have found that dogs rest more with soft classical music, audiobooks, and other steady sounds than with silence or busy radio. They also found dogs get used to the same sound after a few days, so variety helps. Steady noise, a fan, and rain are good bases because they cover outside sounds instead of adding new ones.

Fireworks and thunderstorms

Fireworks and thunder are mostly low booms. Higher sounds like white noise cannot cover them well. A deep brown noise played before the fireworks start, combined with closed curtains and a safe den, reduces how sudden each bang feels.

Some trainers use recordings of storms played very quietly over weeks, paired with treats, to help dogs get used to them. That is called desensitization. It works best with guidance from a vet or behaviorist.

If your dog is panting, shaking, hiding, or destructive during noise, talk to your vet. Severe noise fear can be treated.

Questions

Does white noise help dogs?

It can cover outside noises and help some dogs settle. Lower noises like brown noise often work better for booms.

Should I leave sound on for my dog when I go out?

Many owners do. A low, familiar sound can help an anxious dog. Test it while you are home first.

Is calming music for dogs better than noise?

Some studies found soft classical music helped shelter dogs rest. Noise is better at covering outside sounds. Try both.
