Cat purring sounds

Updated 22 October 2026

A purring cat on your lap is one of the most relaxing sounds there is. A purr is low, steady, and rhythmic, rising and falling with each breath. This is a real cat recorded up close, played from random points with soft crossfades, so it goes on as long as you like.

How cats purr

A cat purrs by rapidly twitching the muscles of the larynx, about 25 to 150 times a second, as it breathes in and out. That is why a purr has a rumble with a slow rise and fall. Cats purr when content, but also when stressed or hurt, as a way to soothe themselves.

Purring for people

Many people find a purr calming for sleep and anxiety. You will see claims that purring frequencies heal bones; those come from a theory that has not been proven in people.
