Owl sounds

Updated 22 October 2026

An owl hooting in the dark is one of the calmest night sounds. Here, owls call softly now and then over crickets and a light wind. The hoots are real tawny owls, recorded at night by field recordists and played one at a time at random.

Owl calls

Many owls hoot in short series, two to four notes falling slightly in pitch. Owls call most in the evening and before dawn, to claim territory and keep in touch with a mate.

Are these real owl recordings?

Yes. They are well-rated CC0 recordings of tawny owls from Freesound.

Are owl sounds good for sleep?

They are soft and infrequent, so many people find them fine. Lower them if they wake you.
