Cricket sounds

Updated 22 October 2026

Crickets are the sound of a warm summer night. Their chirps are high, soft, and steady, and many people find them as relaxing as rain. These are real summer nights, recorded on a back porch and in a field, played from random points so the chorus never loops.

Why crickets chirp

Male crickets chirp by rubbing their wings together to attract mates. They chirp faster when it is warm. For the snowy tree cricket, counting chirps in 14 seconds and adding 40 gives a rough temperature in Fahrenheit, a rule known as Dolbear's law.
