Background sounds for reading and writing

Updated 22 October 2026

Music with lyrics competes with the words you are reading, and even instrumental music can pull you along with its melody. Sounds without a tune leave the words alone. A fire, rain on the window, or a distant cafe set a mood without asking you to listen.

How to set it up

  1. Press Play on Reading for a fireplace with light rain.
  2. For writing, try Writing, a far-off cafe with rain. Some people write better with a little life in the room.
  3. Keep the volume low. The sound should set the scene, not hold your attention.
  4. Turn off birds and chimes. Random events pull your eyes off the page.

Why not music?

Reading uses the same language systems as listening to lyrics, so songs with words make reading slower for most people. Instrumental music is better, but its changes in melody still catch the ear. Ambient sounds have no story to follow, which is why they make good reading companions.

Setting a mood for fiction

Match the sound to the book. Rain and a fire for a mystery, a forest for a fantasy, the sea for a sailing story, a train for a long journey. You can build a scene in the studio and save it to come back to.

Questions

What is the best background sound for reading?

Rain, a fireplace, or a soft distant cafe. Anything steady without words.

Is it better to read in silence?

If your room is quiet and you focus well, silence is fine. Background sound helps most when there is noise you want to cover.
