Train sounds for sleeping
Updated 22 October 2026
Many people sleep better on a train than anywhere else. The low rumble and the steady clack of the wheels on rail joints are rhythmic and calming, like being rocked. These are real recordings of train rides, played from random points with soft crossfades so you never hear a loop.
Press play
Play opens the sound masker with this mix already loaded, so you can hear it and shape it.
How to set it up
- Press Play on Train.
- For sleep, play Night train in the rain, which is softer.
- Open it in the sound masker to make the rumble deeper with the Noise layer.
Why the clack of a train is soothing
The clickety-clack comes from wheels crossing joints between rail sections. It is regular, like a slow heartbeat, and the rumble beneath it is a natural brown noise. Modern welded track is much quieter, so the classic sound is now mostly a memory, which adds to its charm.
Questions
Are train sounds good for sleep?
Many people find the rhythm relaxing. Lower the Train layer if it keeps you awake.
Is this a real train?
Yes. One recording is a modern train gliding over the rails, the other a small steam train in Wales. Both are CC0 recordings from Freesound.
